Lord, help me walk in faith, not fear.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 · KJV

Devotional.

I've been trying to introduce my two boys to more music.

Instead of defaulting to Paw Patrol or another cartoon, I've been putting on classical music. They really like Yo-Yo Ma playing Bach's cello suites.

But I know what sounds effortless when Yo-Yo Ma plays is actually decades of practice.

Thousands of hours. Getting it wrong. Trying again. Building muscle memory until the fingers know where to go without thinking.

I used to be a musician, so I know how hard it was to learn an instrument.

I think that faith works the same way.

It's not something you either have or don't have. It's something you build. Like a muscle.

Every time you choose faith over fear, you're strengthening it. Every time you give in to fear, you're reinforcing that pattern instead.

You don't wake up suddenly able to trust God perfectly in the same way you don't wake up being able to play an instrument.

You practice. You choose faith in small moments, the minor worry, the everyday anxiety, the small "what if."

You get it wrong sometimes. Fear wins some rounds. But you keep practicing. And slowly, choosing faith becomes more natural.

But if you stop practicing, you lose it. You can learn to play a piece beautifully, but if you don't keep playing it, your fingers forget.

When the boys listen to Yo-Yo Ma, they only hear the finished piece. They never hear the tens of thousands of hours behind it.

It's easy to look at someone with steady faith and assume they were born that way. Most of the time, you're hearing the finished piece. What you don't see is every time they chose to trust God when fear was louder.

Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen."

Faith trusts what you can't see yet. Fear does the opposite. It treats the worst thing you can imagine as though it has already happened.

And unlike learning an instrument, you're not practicing on your own. Every time you choose to trust Him, God proves faithful, and that makes the next choice a little easier.

So today, when fear speaks first, don't wait until you feel brave. Choose faith in the small moment in front of you.

Then do it again tomorrow.

Prayer.

Lord, help me walk in faith, not fear, choosing trust over anxiety every time the choice presents itself, which is constantly, all day long.

Fear feels natural, automatic, the default response to uncertainty, but faith requires intention, a conscious decision to believe You over what I'm feeling.

Teach me that walking in faith doesn't eliminate fear but refuses to let fear dictate my steps, that I can feel afraid and still choose to move forward in trust.

Faith and fear both ask me to believe something I can't see, fear says the worst will happen, faith says You're in control, and I get to choose which voice I listen to.

Help me recognize when fear is driving, when I'm making decisions from anxiety instead of trust, when I'm walking in fear and calling it wisdom or caution.

Remind me that walking in faith isn't reckless but the safest path, that trusting You is wiser than trusting my fears, that faith's direction is always better than fear's.

Give me strength to choose faith when fear feels more reasonable, to walk in trust when anxiety seems more realistic, to believe You over what I'm afraid of.

Let me walk in faith, not fear today, choosing trust repeatedly, building a pattern of faith-steps that weakens fear's hold and strengthens my confidence in You.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

To think about.

  1. What am I fearful of at the moment?
  2. When have I chosen faith over fear recently, even in a small moment?
  3. Where have I stopped "practicing" faith and let fear become my default response?
  4. Who in my life models strong faith, and what can I learn from how they've built it?
  5. Where do I need to rebuild faith that's faded because I stopped practicing?
